Lots of good things are happening at the moment in the Australasia Preserves community, including the May Monthly meetup (to be held on Wednesday 29th May), and the work being done by the Digital Preservation Education Working Group.
The May Monthly meetup is featuring three speakers: Kassi Hays, Evanthia Samaras and Louise Curham. Kassi is a library technician at the State Library of Victoria who will share details about her professional placement at the National Library of Australia’s Digital Preservation team. Eva is an archivist and researcher currently working at Public Record Office Victoria who will speak about her PhD Research Placement with the Digital Preservation Team at the British Library to investigate the role of virus checking in long-term collection management and digital preservation. And Louise is an experimental filmmaker and archivist, who will talk on her PhD studies around digital preservation and variable media.

The Digital Preservation Education Working Group is busy developing multiple outputs. Education and training for digital preservation was identified as a top priority at an open meeting held in Melbourne in February 2019 in conjunction with the IDCC 2019 conference. A trial “Digital Preservation Carpentry” lesson run as a workshop at the IDCC 2019 conference also acted as a catalyst. The need for a consistent approach to developing education and training material, and to expand and finalise the Digital Preservation Carpentry workshop, lead to establishing a Working Group within Australasia Preserves, whose scope is to:
1. Further develop existing workshop framework and content for learning about digital preservation principles and experimenting with tools and technology2. Investigate how to further the development of Australasian-focused digital preservation training and education, building on work to date undertaken by the Australasia Preserves community
The Working group is currently expanding and further developing the workshop material that was trialled at the IDCC conference into the concept of “Digital Preservation Essentials”: a series of workshops and lessons aiming to cover various functions and aspects of digital preservation work. In addition, a set of draft principles for developing new education and training material is being developed, and work is about to begin on a ‘Train the Trainer’ module to support the sharing and teaching of the materials being developed.
